Marrakech to Tiziane (5 hours walking)
You’ll be picked up early at your accommodation in Marrakech for the scenic drive through the foothills of the Atlas Mountains to the trailhead at Imi Oughlad (1450 m). The view of Mt. Toubkal will get you excited for what lies ahead!
After meeting your guide, cook and team of mules and muleteers, begin your trek on a switchbacking trail through fields of corn and forests of pine and juniper. Break for lunch after 2 ½ hours of gentle ascent, then descend slightly for another 2 ½ hours to the red clay village of Tiziane (1750 m). You’ll spend the night there in a comfortable gite.
Tiziane to D’knt (5 hours walking)
A 2 ½ hour walk through walnut groves takes you up and over your first mountain pass, Tizi n’Taghrhourte (1995 m), then along a rare and enjoyable flat stretch to Assaka Spring. Enjoy lunch in the shade, and oncer you’re rested continue 2 ½ hours to the village of D’knt (1870 m). Enjoy another delicious Moroccan dinner before sleeping soundly at the gite.
D’knt to Tamsoult (6 hours walking)
The first 3 hours of walking will take you through terraced fields of corn and barley to your next pass, Tizi n’Tagdalte. Descend gently to another refreshing spring for lunch. A further 3 hours through groves of walnut and cherry will bring you to a gushing mountain river, and, just beyond, the terraced villages of Tizi Oussem (1850 m) and Tamsoult, where you’ll spend the night in a mountain hut.
Tamsoult to Toubkal Refuge (6 hours walking)
A moderately difficult hike will take you to the highest point yet of the trek, the pass of Tizi Aguelzim (3550 m). After you catch your breath (and take some photos!) you’ll traverse across the upper Toubkal Valley to the Toubkal Refuge, nestled in the rocks at snowline (3207 m).
Enjoy the company of other trekkers and climbers from around the world before eating a hearty Moroccan dinner and getting a good night’s sleep—tomorrow will be a big day!
Summit Mt. Toubkal, descend to Imlil, drive to Marrakech (9
You’ll begin the 3 hour ascent of Mt. Toubkal at 6:00 am. The trail is steep and relentless, but not technical, and the view at the top will make every step worth the effort! Enjoy the thin air and stunning panoramas from the top before descending back to the refuge for a well-earned lunch.
Continue your descent, visiting the pre-Islamic marabout shrine of Sidi Chamharouch along the way. A final 2 hours of walking will bring you to Imlil, the typical start of Toubkal climbs, and the end of your Atlas Mountains trek.
Relax during the 1 ½ hour drive back to Marrakech. You’ll be back at your accommodation by early evening, leaving you time to explore the bazaars—if you have the energy!
